What comes to mind when you think about monitoring and evaluation (M&E)?
If you’re like most people, the first things that pop up are complicated indicators, numbers, charts, spreadsheets, logframes of all types, more indicators, more numbers…am I right?
On a more emotional level, to some members of a project implementation team (especially those who consider M&E responsibilities to belong only to those with ‘M&E’ in their job title), M&E can seem like a particularly mean auditor. Their perception of M&E is a never-ending series of demands for data, an endless checks and controls on what’s happening in implementation, and a revolving door of evaluators and survey implementers.
